The name Toyota Hilux needs no introduction in Malaysia. In fact, “Hilux” has become a common term among locals when referring to a pickup truck. It has long been the backbone for businesses and adventurers alike. In Malaysia, the current generation of the Toyota Hilux has already been on the market for over a decade.

Toyota Hilux EV Arrives in Malaysia
UMW Toyota Motor wasted no time capitalising on the ever-rising diesel prices. The sole Toyota distributor in Malaysia announced the ninth-generation Hilux "Travo" — and better yet, the EV version has arrived in Malaysia ahead of the combustion-engined variants. The Hilux EV is priced at RM226,330 on-the-road and comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.

Hilux EV Malaysia Specifications
As previously discussed, the Toyota Hilux EV is a fully imported (CBU) model from Thailand. In brief, the electric Hilux is powered by a pair of electric motors producing a combined output of 193 hp, with torque figures of 268 Nm at the rear axle and 205 Nm at the front.

These motors draw power from a 59.2 kWh battery, which Toyota claims is good for up to 257 km of range on the WLTP cycle. When it needs topping up, it supports DC fast charging at up to 125 kW, taking just 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 80%.
While the zero-emission powertrain is a clear advantage, the electric Hilux does sacrifice some of its trademark muscle. Where the diesel variant can haul up to one tonne of cargo, the electric version is limited to just 715 kg. Towing capacity also takes a significant hit, dropping from 3.5 tonnes down to 1.6 tonnes.
That said, this is the most technologically advanced Hilux ever sold in Malaysia. It comes equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Multi-Terrain System with dedicated off-road modes, Level 2 ADAS, and a 360-degree surround camera.
As for those waiting on the diesel Hilux Travo, UMW Toyota Motor has yet to set any timeline for that launch.

8th Generation Hilux in Malaysia
At the time of writing, UMW Toyota Motor, the assembler, distributor, and exporter of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, continues to offer the 8th-generation Hilux. When it was introduced to replace the 7th generation in 2010, it brought noticeable improvements in performance and capability.

For example, the 2.8L engine saw its output increased to 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque, while service intervals were extended to 10,000 km compared to 5,000 km previously. At launch, the 7th-generation Hilux in Malaysia was priced between RM104,880 and RM173,270.

In 2024, Toyota Malaysia revised the Hilux lineup with minor updates. These included the addition of a 360-degree camera and wireless phone charging, but prices increased by up to RM4,200. Meanwhile, international markets had already begun receiving a 48V mild hybrid variant that offers improved performance and better fuel efficiency.

When Will the 9th Generation Hilux Arrive in Malaysia?
After more than 10 years in the Malaysian market, it is only natural for consumers to expect a major update. Minor facelifts and small feature upgrades are no longer enough. Based on the transition timeline from the 7th to the 8th generation, it is reasonable to expect the 9th-generation Hilux to arrive in Malaysia around 2026.
This is not merely speculation. Toyota has already unveiled the 9th-generation Hilux in November 2025 at the Thai Motor Expo, confirming that several Asian markets will begin receiving it from 2026 onwards.
What’s New in the 9th Generation Hilux
The 9th-generation Hilux, also known as the Toyota Hilux Travo, introduces significant updates over its predecessor. While it continues to use the IMV platform, the exterior has been completely redesigned with a “Cyber Sumo” concept. It features a grille similar to the Toyota Corolla Cross and sleek DRLs inspired by Toyota’s latest models.

Inside, the pickup gets a major upgrade with a larger 12.3-inch infotainment display, matched by a similarly sized digital instrument cluster. The dashboard design takes inspiration from the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
In Thailand, all variants are powered by a 2.8L 1GD-FTV engine producing up to 201 hp and 500 Nm. The new Hilux also comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, offering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance, along with a Multi-Terrain System featuring various drive modes.

Another highlight of the Hilux Travo is the introduction of a fully electric variant, known as the Toyota Hilux Travo-e. It is powered by dual electric motors producing nearly 200 hp, with a driving range of up to 240 km (WLTP).
Based on current market conditions in Malaysia, the diesel variant is likely to arrive first. There is also a possibility of a mild hybrid version, while the EV variant remains less certain for now.
