When the Proton X50 was launched in October 2020, the B-segment SUV market in Malaysia was relatively quiet, largely dominated by the Honda HR-V. However, the Honda model came with a price point that was out of reach for many buyers. The Proton X50 quickly emerged as a strong contender upon its arrival, offering a well-rounded SUV with solid performance, advanced technology, and an affordable price.

2020: Proton X50 Challenges the Honda HR-V
Priced between RM79,200 and RM103,300, the Proton X50 was offered in four variants, all powered by a 1.5L turbocharged engine paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission. It delivered features that exceeded expectations for its price, including the GKUI 19 infotainment system with a touchscreen display, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
Combined with the SST exemption introduced during the COVID-19 period, the Proton X50 quickly gained strong traction among Malaysian buyers.

However, Proton had to revise the pricing once the SST exemption ended in August 2022. Prices increased by between RM7,100 and RM10,000 depending on the variant, but the X50 remained competitive and still more affordable than its rivals.

2023: Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition
In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Proton’s R3 performance division, a special edition Proton X50 was introduced. The Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition. This variant focused purely on cosmetic enhancements with no changes to performance.

Limited to just 200 units, this special edition featured a distinctive black exterior with yellow accents on the grille, hood, side skirts, side mirrors, and rear spoiler, along with R3 badging in the cabin. It was clearly aimed at collectors and enthusiasts.

2024: 360 Camera, Spotify, and Locally Assembled Engine
In its fourth year on the Malaysian market, Proton introduced a minor update known as a Running Change (RC), despite expectations for a full facelift. One key change was the engine, which began local assembly at the Tanjung Malim plant instead of being fully imported from China.

Proton also claimed improvements in Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) across more than 20 areas of the vehicle. Inside the cabin, users gained a 360-degree camera system, and Spotify was finally integrated into the infotainment system. Additionally, all variants were standardised with the same 10.3-inch infotainment display and instrument cluster, with no changes to pricing.

2025: Major Proton X50 Facelift
After five years in the market, Proton introduced a significant facelift in July 2025. The updated Proton X50 was based on the Geely Binyue L, featuring a sportier exterior and a more premium interior.
The most notable upgrade was under the hood, where the X50 received a new 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, delivering higher output than before. The new engine produces 178PS and 290Nm, compared to the previous 147hp and 226Nm.

Inside, the cabin now features a larger 14.6-inch display with wireless support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. ADAS functionality has also been expanded to the Premium variant and above, whereas it was previously limited to the top-spec model.
Prices have increased slightly, now ranging between RM89,900 and RM113,300.
With nearly 160,000 units sold to date, the Proton X50 remains among the top 10 best-selling cars in Malaysia since 2021.
