Proton Hybrid Could Outpower Honda And Toyota

Proton has shared more details about its FutureMotion HEV hybrid powertrain at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo 2026. For context, the hybrid system was first shown to the public during KLIMS 2026 in June 2026, as we previously reported.

We initially knew that Proton's upcoming hybrid system would use a 1.5-litre engine. The new information gives us a clearer picture of what to expect from its powertrain.

The petrol engine produces up to around 110 hp and 136 Nm of torque, while the electric motor is rated at around 151 hp and 220 Nm. For comparison, the Honda City e's electric motor produces 107 hp and 253 Nm, while its petrol engine makes 96 hp and 136 Nm.

4 driving modes for Proton's hybrid engine

Proton's FutureMotion HEV uses a dual-motor electric architecture as part of its Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).

The P3 motor is the main driving motor, providing strong electric propulsion to complement the petrol engine. The second motor, known as the P1 motor, primarily starts the petrol engine and can also help drive the vehicle when operating in an all-wheel-drive configuration.

As for the driving modes, the FutureMotion HEV can automatically switch between four modes depending on the vehicle's speed and power requirements:

  • EV: The P3 motor drives the vehicle entirely on electric power, making it suitable for slower urban driving.
  • Series: The petrol engine runs to generate electricity through the P1 motor rather than directly driving the wheels. The concept is similar to Nissan's e-POWER system.
  • Parallel: The petrol engine and electric motor work together to drive the vehicle, providing additional power when needed, such as during overtaking.
  • ICE: The petrol engine directly drives the vehicle, which is suitable for sustained cruising, such as on highways.

Will the Proton AMA02 get the hybrid engine?

As of this article, Proton has yet to provide a clear indication of which production model will receive its new hybrid powertrain.

Industry speculation suggests that the AMA02, an upcoming compact SUV believed to be positioned as a rival to the Perodua Ativa, could be one of the candidates. The Proton Saga Cross name has also been widely speculated, although there is still no official confirmation from Proton.

At least we now have a clearer picture of Proton's new hybrid powertrain. On paper, its petrol engine and electric motor both produce higher peak power than those found in the Honda City e and Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, although actual vehicle performance will ultimately depend on the complete hybrid system and how Proton tunes it.
