Kota Samarahan Is Getting Busier. Motorists, Get Ready

Kota Samarahan is fast becoming a key location for Sarawak, especially in supporting Kuching's growth. New housing spillover, upgraded public transport, and major events all point to the state government making better use of areas beyond the capital.

That's good news for local residents. More vehicles on the road means more demand for reliable automotive services.

Kota Samarahan, a major development hub

Kota Samarahan has grown steadily over the years, driven largely by its student population. The area is home to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), a public university that started operating in 1992. It opened with fewer than 200 students, and now has over 17,000 population on campus. Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Abdul Razak followed in 1999.

From a popular spot among students, Kota Samarahan has grown into a satellite town for Kuching. Marina Peninsula is one example: a community project combining housing, education, healthcare, commercial space, and recreation. Among its latest developments is St. Joseph's Private School, which is set to begin operations there in 2030.

Public transport is bringing Kota Samarahan closer to Kuching

As the population grows, so does the need for efficient public transport. The state government has planned the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Blue Line, a 27.6km route connecting Rembus in Kota Samarahan with Hikmah Exchange in Kuching.

Rembus is also being developed as a depot for hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles, along with a hydrogen generation facility to support them. Phase 1 of KUTS is expected to start operating by the end of 2026, with Phase 2 following in 2027.

Kota Samarahan is now hosting major events

In July 2026, Kota Samarahan became the first location outside Kuching to host the Karnival Jom Heboh, drawing visitors from across Sarawak, particularly Kuching, Serian, and Bau. Nearly 20,000 visitors reportedly turned up for the Konsert Jom Heboh Segulai Sejalai Sarawak Kota Samarahan.

The event took place at the newly upgraded Halaman Samarahan. The state government spent RM1.5 million on the first phase, and the next phase will involve upgrading the lighting system at a cost of around RM500,000.
