Kelantan is one of Malaysia’s most fascinating destinations to explore. Yet, if you browse popular travel blogs, you’ll often see the same recommendations repeated. They are crowded, viral, and overly commercialised spots.

If you’re looking for something fresher, quieter, and more authentic, Kelantan actually has many underrated locations waiting to be discovered.

Here are a few places worth exploring on your next visit.

Start Your Journey at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, Pengkalan Chepa

Travellers from the Klang Valley may prefer to skip the long drive and take a direct flight to Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa.

While it doesn’t have an aerotrain system like KLIA, getting to Kota Bharu city centre is still convenient. You can take the public bus, Route D12, which connects the airport area directly to the Kota Bharu Bus Station. Alternatively, ride-hailing services are easily available.

If you’re planning a road trip around Kelantan and want peace of mind, the nearest service outlet is Bateriku Pengkalan Chepa. It’s a good idea to have your vehicle checked before heading out on longer journeys.

Skip the Long Queues, Try Kedai Pati Wahid in Dusun Muda

When it comes to breakfast in Kota Bharu, most people will recommend Warung Kita. While the food is good, the long queues can take away from the experience. Instead, try something more authentic and less commercial, try Kedai Pati Wahid in Dusun Muda.

“Kedai pati” carries deep historical roots in Kota Bharu. The concept is similar to a kopitiam but with a unique twist: customers sit surrounding the vendor, facing inward. It somewhat reminiscent of certain Japanese-style eateries. Historians believe the term “kedai pati” comes from the word “merpati” (pigeon), referring to how customers gather closely around the stall.

There are more than 20 kedai pati across Kota Bharu. Popular breakfast choices include half-boiled eggs and nasi berlauk. They are simple, hearty, and distinctly Kelantanese.

Explore Kelantan’s Siamese Heritage at Wat Uttamaram

Kelantan is often known as “Serambi Mekah.” However, long before the arrival of Islam, the state had strong ties with Siam, and Buddhism had already taken root in the region. You’ll find many Buddhist temples scattered across Kelantan, particularly near the border areas. One of the most notable is Wat Uttamaram in Pasir Mas.

The temple’s founder, Tok Raja, once served as the chief Buddhist monk for Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore before his passing in 1962. Because of this legacy, don’t be surprised to see international visitors making the journey to this relatively quiet town.

Take your time to admire the temple’s architecture and tranquil surroundings.

If you encounter any vehicle issues in Pasir Mas, Bateriku Pasir Mas is nearby to assist.

Soak Your Feet at Tok Bok Hot Springs

If you prefer a more natural setting, head further south. Between Pulai Chondong and Machang, you’ll find Taman Rekreasi Air Panas Tok Bok, a favourite relaxation spot among locals.

For just RM5 per person, you can enjoy the hot spring pools and even slide into the water via a water chute, giving it a light theme-park feel. The recreational park also offers event facilities and resort-style accommodation if you plan to stay overnight.

It’s a refreshing break from the usual city attractions. Should you face any car trouble in this area, Bateriku Ketereh is located not far from the park.

Lata Papan: Kuala Krai’s Hidden Gem

From Tok Bok, travel about 20km further south and you’ll reach Kuala Krai. The town is widely known as a transit point, especially during festive seasons when people from the Klang Valley return to Kota Bharu. But that doesn’t mean Kuala Krai lacks attractions of its own.

One of its hidden gems is Lata Papan, a popular picnic and waterfall spot among locals. The facilities are modest but sufficient for a relaxing outdoor break. Parking costs RM1, and the entrance fee is just RM2 per person. It may not be heavily promoted in mainstream travel guides and that’s exactly what makes it special.

If you run into vehicle problems while exploring the area, Bateriku Kuala Krai is close by to help.
