Jaecoo’s first electric vehicle for the Malaysian market has officially been announced. The Jaecoo J5 EV is priced RM10,000 higher than the existing petrol-powered Jaecoo J5. In short, this electric SUV produces around 208hp and offers up to 402km of driving range based on the WLTP cycle.

The Jaecoo J5 EV is offered in Malaysia at RM118,800. A limited-time launch promotion worth up to RM10,000 is also available for the first 1,000 registrations made before 31 October 2026.

The electric SUV is available in Alpine Green, Fjord Grey and Carbon Crystal Black. One of the notable aspects of the Jaecoo J5 EV is that it is locally assembled under the CKD programme, with production taking place at the Chery Corporate Malaysia plant in Shah Alam, Selangor.

208hp electric motor with over 400km range
The Jaecoo J5 EV retains a similar overall design to its petrol-powered sibling. The easiest way to distinguish the EV is its closed-off front grille, as an electric vehicle does not require a conventional radiator grille to cool an internal combustion engine. The EV also gets a different, more futuristic-looking wheel design, while its tyres are supplied by Giti instead of Chao Yang as used on the petrol model. Overall, the Jaecoo J5 has proportions similar to a smaller Land Rover Defender and sits in the B-segment SUV category.
The electric SUV is powered by a single front-mounted motor producing around 208hp and 288Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.7 seconds. The motor is powered by a 58.9kWh LFP battery, which supports 11kW AC charging and up to 130kW DC fast charging.
Using a compatible DC charger, the battery can charge from 30% to 80% in around 28 minutes. With an 11kW AC charger, a 10% to 100% charge takes approximately seven hours. The Jaecoo J5 EV also supports 3.3kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), allowing the vehicle's battery to function as a portable power source for compatible electrical equipment.
13.2-inch screen and up to 1,284 litres of cargo space
The Jaecoo J5 EV is similar in size to models such as the Honda HR-V, Proton X50 and Toyota Yaris Cross, with a wheelbase of approximately 2,620mm. At the rear, there is 480 litres of boot space. Folding down the rear seats increases the available cargo capacity to 1,284 litres. There is also a 35-litre frunk under the front bonnet, occupying the space where the petrol model's engine would normally be located.
Inside the cabin, the Jaecoo J5 EV gets a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also a 50W wireless charging pad, while driving information is displayed through an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster.
The cabin also features a panoramic glass roof, while the seats use TÜV-certified materials designed to be suitable for pet owners. The upholstery is claimed to feature antibacterial, scratch-resistant and low-VOC properties.
Jaecoo J5 EV competitors in Malaysia
At RM118,800, the Jaecoo J5 EV competes with several electric SUVs priced around the RM120,000 mark.
The MG S5 Lux is slightly cheaper at around RM117,500 and offers a longer claimed range of 446km. It also produces 212hp and 350Nm of torque while supporting faster 150kW DC charging.
The Proton eMas 7 Premium costs RM119,800 and is a larger SUV with a more powerful electric motor. It also offers stronger acceleration than the J5 EV.
The Leapmotor B10 Design is priced at RM118,800, matching the J5 EV, but comes with a larger 67.1kWh battery and rear-wheel drive.
Meanwhile, buyers looking for a more distinctive, boxy SUV design can consider the iCaur 03 2WD, which is priced at RM119,800.
The Jaecoo J5 EV may not lead every category, but its combination of a 402km WLTP range, 130kW DC charging, 480-litre boot, extensive equipment and local assembly makes it a compelling option in the RM120,000 electric SUV segment.
Jaecoo J5 EV 12V battery
Despite being an electric vehicle, the Jaecoo J5 EV still uses a conventional 12V battery to power various low-voltage electrical systems in the vehicle. The 12V battery is located under the front bonnet, beneath the panel that now houses the EV's frunk. The battery carries the component code 807000197AA, with a specification of 12V, 60Ah and 480A CCA.
